Down bedroom accessories have long been the trend in luxury bedding. However, a new trend is emerging that stands to be much more beneficial to sleep. Wool comforter carries more benefits than trusted down and are finding their place in the bedding industry.

In many wool products, you will find a repetition of quality materials. Products are generally wrapped in organic cotton and make a point to be responsibility sourced. Many wool products are targeted to differing climates or blanket weight preference and take into account ease of care.

In a general comparison between wool and down, it’s easy to see why wool is the better and more conscionable material for bedding products.

Wool Comforter

Wool Versus Down

It’s first necessary to consider the sources of both products. Wool is generated from sheep, meaning that all effects of wool were initially meant to serve the sheep. While down is actually made from the feathers of ducks and geese.

Insourcing down and wool, wool is actually the more ethically obtained material. Sheep actually benefit from the grooming that comes with wool farming, while down requires plucked feathers from birds that are either dead or affected by the loss of their feathers.

Temperature Regulation –

Many people tend to be very hot or very cold when they sleep. This makes choosing the proper bedding material essential to great sleep function. When compared, down comforters actually lock in heat, while an organic wool comforter is meant to serve sheep in a variety of climates. This means that wool will actually keep you cool if you’re warm or warm if you’re cold.

Moisture Wicking –

Because down traps in heat, it can actually create a humid environment that can become quite uncomfortable. Wool filled comforter will actually wick moisture into the air, creating a perspiration-free sleeping experience.

Product Care –

Down accessories tend to have delicate care instructions to avoid damaging the feathers within your product. While it’s important to read your care tag, wool can often be washed and cared for with ease.

Allergies –

Wool is naturally hypoallergenic whereas down is not and may be irritating to certain skin types. The humidity caused by down comforters can also make them a popular spot for dust mites and allergens are often irritating.

Cost –

As with any luxury item, cost can vary to be quite expensive. Depending on the product you choose wool and down are often comparable in price.

Popular Wool Comforters and Duvets

So now that you know how wool compares to down in many of the categories that serve a purpose in your home – what wool product should you choose?

First, you will need to decide if you prefer a comforter or a duvet. Comforters are usually flatter than a duvet and will often come in a pattern or style. Duvets are often fluffier than comforters and allow you leeway with décor. Duvets are comforter inserts that can be placed in a duvet cover, much like a pillow and a pillowcase.

Wool Pillows to Complete Your Bedding Ensemble

Similar to wool in comforters, your wool pillow will carry many benefits. Because of the hypoallergenic nature of wool, wool pillows will be resistant to irritants such as mold, mildew, or dust mites. The breathability and moisture control offered by wool pillows make them a necessary addition to any bedding overhaul.

Wool pillows will keep their shape due to the durability of wool and the material will stay full and supportive. You can wash your wool pillow but take care to make sure the material is fully dry before putting into the dryer for added fluff. Always refer to the care tag on your product, but wool pillows can easily be cared for.
